Since Tanzanian music star, Diamond Platnumz blew up on the continent,
his star power has known no bounds. Giving the Nigerians (who normally
dominate the African music scene) a run for their money, Diamond has
caused several upsets in numerous pan-African awards, leaving Nigerian
fans asking why or how?
Tanzania’s estimated 50 million population is nothing compared to Nigeria’s estimated 180 million population, but one thing that Diamond Platnumz has working for him is the seeming support from East Africa (especially Swahili speaking territories) .
According to my recent interaction with some
journalists from Kenya, I found out that the biggest and trendiest form
of social media in Tanzania is Instagram. It is not surprising therefore
that Diamond has some 1.1 million followers on Instagram ( He has over
800,000 fans on Facebook and just over 241,000 followers on Twitter).
Davido also has 1.1 million followers on Instagram, while Wizkid has 1
million. What’s more interesting with Diamond’s Instagram presence is
the fact that his 3-month old baby, Tiffah has 157,000 followers on
Instagram. I remember once checking out the accounts of the ‘children’
of US rapper, The Game wondering why those kids had so many followers,
now we have a similar African story.
Clearly Diamond Platnumz’ fans are loyal – isn’t that what great superstars are made of? I remember flying to Dubai from Mauritius with several of the African stars, and Diamond was the one who was swamped by airport staff for photos- right after going through security.
