Sarah and dad Ryan Halbert, 21, were told the news that every parent dreads hearing – their newborn might not survive the night.
"I stayed quite strong until that point but when I heard that, it all hit home,” she said.
"We sat with him the whole night waiting and watching him cry constantly in pain.
"It wasn't like being a parent. It was just watching and feeling helpless because we were scared to touch him."
“When I first held him on my chest, I didn’t even know he was there.
“He was the size of my hand!”
Brave Lukas has spent the last few months being cared for at Newcastle Royal Infirmary's Special Care Baby Unit.
Now 20 weeks, he is still a tiny 8lb 15oz – but Sarah says she has seen him grow massively since his birth.
He has chronic lung disease and will need oxygen and the support of a monitor for up to two years.
Dr Alan Fenton, consultant neonatal paediatrician, said: "He's almost at the bottom end of the babies that we can treat. He comes under the heading of extreme prematurity so he's done well.
"He's a lucky young man and he's a credit to his family and the nursing staff here and at Carlisl
